MVPP & MSHARP Information Workshop
Thursday, April 29, 2010 - 8:00am-12:00pm - Huntsman Corporation
Who Should Attend...
This workshop is a must for anyone concerned about health and safety on the job including:
- Managers concerned about liability and workers’ compensation costs.
- Employees who want to learn proper techniques for protecting their safety and health at work.
- Business owners who want to learn about compliance with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).
Why You Need This Workshop...
-
To reduce disabling injuries and illnesses to employees - and to ensure that every worker goes home safe and healthy every day.
-
To reduce the high costs of work-related injuries. Nationally, employers spent an estimated 50.8 billion on wage payments and medical care for workers hurt on the job. (Liberty Mutual Safety Index 2005). This is only a portion of the total costs of work-related injuries. Indirect costs such as overtime, training, and lost productivity can also burden employers.
-
To enhance your company’s bottom line. A strong safety and health commitment not only protects workers, it also reduces workers’ compensation costs, improves employee morale, and increases production and quality.
What You'll Learn...
This workshop is for those companies who want to learn how to apply for Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) or the Michigan Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program
(MSHARP). These recognition programs are designed especially for high performing worksites
with an exemplary history of safety and health diligence. Participants receive information
regarding the benefits of participation in these programs such as exemptions from programmed
inspections and state/national recognition for their success in organizational excellence. The
application and review process is covered in detail along with the differences in qualification
requirements for acceptance in the MVPP and MSHARP.

President's Corner - February 2010
Our February Technical meeting was a huge success with great food, a great turnout, and a great speaker! Our chapter members had such a good time we practically had to throw them out!
Mr. Doug Kalinowski, Director of MIOSHA was our keynote speaker. He is always entertaining and informative and this meeting was no exception. He covered the following items:
- David Michaels / Federal OSHA Initiatives
- Statistics
- Connecting MIOSHA to Industry
- Tough Times / Safety Pays
- H1N1
- Certain Initiatives
- MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI)
- CET Grants
- Proposed Rules
- Significant Cases
MIOSHA has been successful under Mr. Kalinowski’s leadership over the last several years as evidenced by the significant decline in work related injuries and fatalities in our state. I believe they will have continued success when looking at the MIOSHA Five Year Strategic Plan which focuses on:
- Training and education of staff, employers, and employees
- Effecting positive change in safety culture, and
- Strengthening public confidence through continued excellence in the development and delivery of MIOSHA’s programs and services.
We are lucky to be in this state as it appears that federal OSHA is heading backward toward a more punitive and adversarial relationship with their employers while MIOSHA is focusing on how to affect a positive safety culture to protect their workers.
In these tough times MIOSHA is launching a Safety Pays! campaign.
Safety Pays! Fact Sheet (pdf)
I invite you to attend our next meeting in March for more networking and education. We will be having a joint meeting with our Student Sections and with the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD). Watch for more details in an upcoming e-mail.

October 2009 Meeting Wrap-Up
Our October technical meeting was a very informative presentation by Darryl C. Hill who as many of you know is the Vice President, Safety & Health North America for ABB and the current ASSE President Elect. He discussed the future of the safety profession as well as the future of the safety professional. His learning objectives included:
- Explain the importance of the safety professional / profession to the business community
- Discuss the CoPA Value Initiative and how the project can further advance ASSE and the safety profession / professional
- Analyze current trends and how the safety professional can position themselves for future prosperity
We also enjoyed a fabulous lunch from Jimmy Johns (almost without a beverage to go along with the great sandwiches until Darryl saved the day) Darryl took several questions and then we were treated to a tour of ABB’s robotic demo area, pretty cool stuff.
